Gums are part of the support system for your teeth. The NHS lists redness, swelling, soreness and bleeding during brushing or flossing among possible signs of gum disease. These signs do not tell you the cause on their own, so persistent or worrying changes deserve a dental assessment.

Daily brushing and cleaning between the teeth help remove plaque. The CDC notes that gum conditions are largely preventable and treatable, with good oral hygiene and regular care from a dental professional playing important roles.

If your gums bleed repeatedly, feel sore or look different, arrange advice rather than trying to diagnose the problem from a picture or online checklist. A dental professional can examine your mouth and recommend care for your circumstances.

This is general oral-health education and is not a substitute for a dental examination.
